An initiative that started as a Kindergarten for fifteen children and one teacher in 1988 in a sub-urban area of Bangalore is now a school with over 400 children, (15 teachers) studying up to the 10th class. Known as Sri Vidyanikethan School, this initiative is special to that strata of society where families are constrained to discontinue their children’s education in order to make their ends meet.
At present, Sri Vidyanikethan School has classes from pre-primary class to 10th Standard and provides education at highly subsidized rates, thus making it possible for families living in low-income communities and slums to ensure schooling for their children. Most of Sri Vidyanikethan School’s students are from families working in the unorganized sector as vendors and service providers. Going beyond class room teaching, the school regularly organizes extra-curricular activities, and engages parents, volunteers and corporates in various activities which enriches the children’s education. Additionally, the teachers also upgrade their knowledge by interacting with various volunteers and by participating in various workshops. Till about 1000 students have passed out from the school.
Located in Jaraganahalli, Bangalore Sri Vidyanikethan school has well-lit and ventilated classrooms and essential facilities such as school bus and a spacious hall on the terrace for functions.
The employees of Accenture regularly volunteer with the students and mentor them on various including computer coding) The students of the school regularly celebrate annual day and various festivals and participate in inter-school competitions. The skills of the teachers are also updated regularly through training programs.
Over the years, the support of many donors has led to the development of the school not just in terms of infrastructure but also in academics and extra-curricular activities.
