Skills Development training programmes at Sarjapur

Background

The majority of the beneficiaries of Vidyanikethan are of special relevance is the fact that all the beneficiaries are women. The socio-economic background of the beneficiaries is such that most of them belong to the informal sector working class. However, there is a gradual shift in the mind-set of the present generation, where there is emphasis for economic self-reliance through sustainable livelihoods and for continued education for the children.

 Project Objective :

  • To provide opportunities for inclusive development for women that will benefit at an individual level, family level and the social level
  • To provide opportunities to women to supplement their family income through training in income friendly skills

Target Group / No. of Beneficiaries :

Women & Adolescents from low income families for 50 beneficiaries training for 6 months. 

Summary of the project :

Vidyanikethan makes efforts to provide gender friendly and income friendly trainings for the communities it works for, and particularly for women. As part of this effort, it is constantly identifying those courses which will be both interesting for women and also support them in earning.

Vocational Skills Training Programs for the economically disadvantaged women to empower them for the livelihood opportunities. As part of our regular activities in rural areas we coordinate with the destitute women and poor adolescent girls for the conducting of basic tailoring courses for their livelihoods. As per their desire we have conducted tailoring courses for them in Mugulur Village, Sarjapur, Anekal Taluk of Bangalore District, Karnataka.

Skills Development training programmes for women at Jaraganahalli, Bangalore

Vidyanikethan takes pride in the skills development training programme that is being supported by Accenture and CAF. This is the fifth year of conducting tailoring & Embioderdary classes for adolescent girls and women from neighboring areas. So far 580 women are trained in different Multi crafts courses.  The objectives of the programme are

  • To provide opportunities for inclusive development for women that will benefit at an individual level, family level and the social level
  • To provide opportunities to women to supplement their family income through training in income friendly skills
  • To promote gender well-being and personal wellness through sessions on life-skills, rights and health, among other issues.

Overall impact of the tailoring course

  • Participants have learnt the basics of tailoring but also about as market friendly garments with adequate theoretical and practical classes.
  • The participants got a good idea and practice to tailor cloth based products or utility items such as cloth wallets, aprons, purses.
  • Most participants are benefitting financially as they are saving money by stitching their own garments
  • Many ladies have started taking orders for blouses
  • A few ladies have got job placement in garment factories as companies give preference to ladies with tailoring skills
