Dr. Susheela says “Vidyanikethan, (Society for Education and Social development) is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1988 to improve the lives and livelihoods of individuals and families, especially children and women, from low income groups and from the vulnerable, marginalized and under-developed sections of the society. Based in Bangalore, (India) Vidyanikethan interventions in four key areas - health, socioeconomic development, education and environment - facilitate and provide opportunities to the needy by creating awareness about relevant issues, and enhancing their access to improved lives and livelihoods. In the education sector, the work includes improving the reach and quality of primary education, motivating parents to enroll their children in early childhood educational programmes and health care services based on preventative care, facilitating treatment by referrals, organizing health camps and sensitization programmes. In addition, it organizes tree plantation drives, eco-friendly practices such as eco-sanitation, Rain Water Harvesting, watershed programmes etc in environment. The socio-economic programme includes mobilizing the under-privileged women into self help groups, facilitating vocational skills development programmes and linkages to financial institutions to arrange loans for self employment enterprises. It works in the urban, peri-urban, and rural areas of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. At present, it‘s reach is about 270 villages and slums,32 panchayats,10 blocks/Taluks and covering about 27100 families and an approximate population of more than 150000. It is registered under Karnataka Societies Registration Act, 1960 and with the Foreign Contribution Regulations Act (FCR (A)”
